Top-notch decor and planning help medical-themed party pull in cash for Parkinson's research

BY SHARYN LONSDALE CORRESPONDENT

The staff of the Royal Palm Retirement Center took no chances when planning their first "Charlotte Scrubs Extravaganza" fundraiser for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.

Marketing Director Karen Dettor and her team stacked the evening's program with dinner, music by The Cracker Blues Band, a silent auction and enough medical-themed diversions to keep the crowd at the Cultural Center of Charlotte County entertained.

Setting the scene was the event design by Island Coast Interiors, which donated its services for the evening. Larger than life figures of The Blues Brothers in medical attire greeted the guests as they came out of the rain. Inside, drinks were served at the Last Call Pharmacy, complete with "drop off" and "pick up" windows. The centerpieces involved plastic bags filled with a golden liquid and some of the Cultural Center staff wore patients' robes with prosthetic posteriors.

The fashion show was also a bit on the wild side as area medical personnel dressed in costume, with a few lampooning their own profession. Dr. Alvaro Bada dressed as a surgeon whose scalpel had seen better days, and Dr. Arturo Rodriguez-Martin, the show's big winner, sent a powerful, if humorous, message about the ill effects of smoking.

But for many, the unexpected highlight of the evening was the Senior Walker Drill Team.

Female staff from Royal Palm, dressed in over-sized and over-stuffed housecoats and gray wigs, strutted out on walkers and performed a precision drill, then danced to "I Like to Move It."

This was the first year for the Scrubs Extravaganza. Karen Hallenbeck, executive director of Royal Palm and a drill team member, said the event has been a dream of hers for three years.

Dettor said their goal was to bring public awareness of Parkinson's to the community and to have a good time.

From the reaction of the crowd, the prognosis for a second Scrubs looks promising.
